From the outset, I immersed myself in the diverse and dynamic environment of the Student Union. Cardiff University is home to a rich tapestry of cultures, interests, and student groups. I took the time to understand the unique needs and preferences of our audience, which helped me tailor designs that resonated with various demographics—from freshers to postgraduate students.

My primary focus was to create visually appealing materials that promoted events, campaigns, and services offered by the Students' Union. This involved:

1. Event Promotions: I designed eye-catching posters, flyers, and digital graphics for events ranging from welcome parties and society fairs to academic workshops and mental health awareness campaigns. I ensured that each design captured the spirit of the event while maintaining a cohesive look that aligned with the Students' Union’s branding.
2. Social Media Content: In our digital age, engaging with students through social media was crucial. I developed a variety of graphics for platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, aiming to create content that was shareable and engaging. This included infographics, and promotional posts that encouraged interaction and participation.
3. Branding and Merchandise: I worked on various merchandise designs, from t-shirts and tote bags to stickers and stationery. These items not only served as promotional tools but also fostered a sense of community and pride among students.
4. Collaborative Projects: Collaborating with student societies and other departments was a significant aspect of my role. I enjoyed brainstorming ideas and translating their visions into impactful designs. This collaborative spirit enriched my creativity and helped me produce work that truly reflected the students’ voices.

Receiving feedback was an integral part of my design process. I often sought input from students and staff, using their insights to refine my work. This iterative approach ensured that the final designs not only met but exceeded expectations, fostering a sense of ownership among the student community.

The success of our campaigns was reflected in increased attendance at events and heightened engagement on social media. It was incredibly rewarding to see how effective design could drive participation and enhance the overall student experience at Cardiff University.

My time at Cardiff University Students' Union significantly contributed to my professional growth. I honed my skills in design software, project management, and communication. More importantly, I developed a deeper understanding of how to create designs that evoke emotion and foster connection within a community.

Reflecting on my experience as a graphic designer there, I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to a vibrant student culture. The role allowed me to blend creativity with purpose, creating visuals that resonated with students and enriched their university experience.
